A near perfect spring day with beautiful sunny conditions and a cool southerly breeze greeted 10 cyclists to take on the annual President's Handicap classic - a 33 km dash from the Swan Reach highway bridge through Tambo Upper, Bruthen and Mossiface before finishing just north of Swan Reach again. The circuit features three climbs on the outward leg, the first after only 500m, the remaining two although not steep are about 1.5 km in length, but it is the two climbs on the return leg along Mossifcae Rd that really shake up the race. Ian Johnson, Leigh Thompson and Ross Wembridge were away first with 12 mins advantage, followed by Chris Dungey, Al Campbell, Katrina East and Damian Crozier at 6 mins, who were pursued 6 mins later by the scratch markers of Linc Kelly, Tom Dellar and Warren Meade.
Ian, Leigh and Ross worked together on the outward leg - Katrina dropped off the second bunch at the beginning of the second climb and Warren went off the back of the scratch markers on the third outward climb. Rolling through Bruthen was pleasant enough but the southerly headwind was hard work for all before the first climb on Mossiface Road. Leigh went out the back of the limit group, Damian got a small break on Chris who got one on Al, while Tom and Linc pushed each other hard up this first hill. At the top of the second hill, Ian & Ross still had about 3 minutes on Damian (who had Leigh in his sights) but before he could make the junction, the Tom-Linc-Al-Chris express roared past and picked up another carriage, passing Leigh with about 5 kms to race. Catching the two limit guys was going to be tough, but the express trimmed over a minute from their lead in the last 5 kms.
At the finish line, Ian out-sprinted Ross to take this year's title, with Linc winning a close finishing sprint by a bike lnegth for third to take fastest time from Tom (who put in another strong performance against a quality A-grade opponent), followed in 3s later by Damian, Al at 10s and Chris a further minute back. They were followed in by Leigh, Warren and Katrina some 2 mins later.
Thanks to David McLean for race and sign duties and to Blanche and Marc for timing and verbal support duties. Coffee and cakes, scones and tarts at Over the Hedge over the road rounded out a great afternoon of racing.

Belgian's bash - Flaggy Ck-Glenaladale-Fingerboards-Flaggy Ck - 41.1 km
Cloudy 12 deg, 25 km/h S
Last Saturday saw a small field tackle the inaugural Belgian's Bash - a 40 km jaunt in variable wind conditions around the hills and flats starting from Flaggy Creek, out through Glenaladale to The Fingerbaords and Walpa, finishing with the brutal Rodericks Rd climb and gradual uphill drag back to Flaggy Creek. Damian Crozier, Ian Johnson and Blanche Evans (in her first race for more than 12 months) set off three minutes ahead of Stuart Derham, Chris Dungey and Al Campbell, with Ashley Higman, Tom Dellar and Warren Meade off scratch a further three minutes back.
Damian and Ian distanced Blanche on the steep descent down Rodericks Rd but had little time to get comfortable before the Derham, Dungey and Campbell freight train caught them well before the timber bridge. Walking the planks across the Mitchell River was short relief before Stuart and Chris roared away up the hill. It wasn't long before Stuart pulled away from Chris and Al dropped back from Damian and Ian, only to catch onto the Higman and Dellar combination, and passing Damian and Ian before dropping down Treasure's Hill on the return to Walpa, Warren apparently having been left behind earlier to escort Blanche. Stuart took a two minute lead into the Rodericks Road climb from Ashley and Tom, but Tom showed his every increasing talent by dropping Ashley and taking one-and-a-half minutes out of Stuart's lead by the time the finish line was reached. Ashley took third place, having passed Chris on the climb. Al was fourth, followed in by Damian, Ian, Warren and Blanche (the latter two arriving to bronx cheers and suggestions of romantic shenanigans somewhere out on the course).
Marc presented Stuart with a fantastic Molteni cycling jersey for his victory and Tom won a home-cooked dinner for four with drinks (courtesy of Marc) for fastest time (although Tom might have to cellar the wine for another twelve months). Thanks to Marc Bouten, in whose name the race was held, for Race Director and muffin cooking duties and to Stuart for signs. It is hoped that this race will become an annual feature of the cycling calendar.
Morwell to Glenmaggie Classic
Congratulations to Ross Wembridge who snared 3rd place in this year's edition of the Morwell to Glenmaggie classic. Ross was part of the limit bunch who were never caught by the other bunches. Bairnsdale Cycling Club also sends best wishes to Rob Monk, a well-known rider of the Gippsland scene, who suffered significant injuries as a result of a very bad crash with about 30 km left to race.
BCC Road Race Champions 2012
Congratulations to David McLean (Open) and Warren Meade (Veterans) in winning their respective races at the 2012 BCC road race club championships, held in very windy, at times drizzly, at times sunny, weather around the exposed Airport Loop circuit. Although numbers were very small in both races, the racing itself was hard nonetheless, especially when our resident Belgian supporter suggested that the 35km/h gusting westerly wind was no more than a gentle Belgian breeze. In the Open race, David and Linc Kelly managed to drop Stu Derham before half of the first lap was completed while Tom Dellar faded at the start of the second lap, leaving Dave & Linc to battle it out. With rider speeds nudging 60km/h along Lower Goon Nure Road, it was only a matter of time before the wind took its toll. Dave got the break on Linc coming up Humphreys Rd the second time and powered up the final rise to take the Open Championship. In the veterans race, Warren broke away early from Leigh and Ian and rode most of the race solo. Leigh and Ian battled on, sometimes enjoying themselves way too much, with Ian out-lasting Leigh to take runner-up and Leigh third. A hard days racing in very difficult conditions. By the end, spectators out-numbered riders with Dave making sure his fan club was out in force. Thanks to James Brownlie for Race Director duties and putting signs out, thanks to Ross Wembridge for rounding up the stray signs and to Damian Crozier for taking a few happy snaps

* punctured at 12km
With the cancellation of the Gippsland Road Race Championships, a number of members from both the Bairnsdale and Sale clubs were looking for any excuse to stretch the legs again. Some Bairnsdale riders were also looking for a race with a profile more akin to a pancake, as best up summed up by President Dave's self-assessment of "how much dignity I've lost over the past few weeks when we've ventured into the 'alps'". With that in mind, two laps around the Airport Loop in a scratch race with secret handicap twist was the order of the day. Following is the race report as supplied:
First to drop off was John Morton at 12km with a puncture. After being partly drafted back on John had James Brownlie in his sights on Forge Creek Road. All the while his rear brake was grabbing. These two worked well together along Humphreys Lane and Bengworden Road. James had been dropped earlier near Peecks Road. The field went through the first lap together at 52 minutes with James and John more than a minute behind. Rohan Cook was next to drop off with cramp about 4km into the second lap. Al Campbell lost touch with the bunch before the Lower Goon Nure Road turnoff. About half way along Lower Goon Nure Road Sekove Koroisamanunu was dropped and despite his best endeavours the leading bunch kept a tantalising distance ahead. Dave Arnup and David McLean had a small lead of about 30-40 metres at the two small rises before the end of Lower Goon Nure Road. As David McLean dropped off on the rise Linc Kelly moved up and joined Dave. These two had a clear turn onto Romawi Road and worked turns to increase their lead to over two minutes at the finish. Both recorded the same time with Dave winning by less than half a wheel. Nick Jehu and Tim Boote who had been looking forward to a relaxed ride finished together, with Nick a bike length ahead closely followed by Stuart Derham. Al Campbell had caught an exhausted Sekove and finished with David McLean. Both David McLean and John Morton had ridden most of the course on the 50km ride from the water tower at 7am. Next in was James Brownlie who had got away from John Morton when he fixed his rubbing brake. Both James and Al rode particularly well hanging onto the bunch for as long as possible then passing tiring riders on their way to the finish. John Morton was next in with Sekove about half a minute behind. Sekove had averaged close to 40 km/hr for the first 45km. This race showed that on a relatively flat course, slower riders can do well if they can stick to the bunch without exhausting themselves. Al won the handicap, followed by James, Dave and Linc. Dave Arnup recorded fastest time. Thanks to David McLean for the signs and Linc and Asher Kelly for the trailer and recording at the finish.

A typical Belgian summer day greeted riders at the Wy Yung Hall for this new classic race. With threats of rain and podium disqualification for those using the small chain ring, Marc encouraged the riders with his usual brand of verbal sting - afterall, the course for the day is Marc's favourite training ground. Starting at the Wy Yung Hall riders headed west along the lumps of Wy Yung-Calulu Rd turning right uphill onto Rodericks Rd, traveling around through Flaggy Creek, then repeating the end section of Wy Yung-Calulu Rd, Rodericks Rd and Flaggy Creek, before heading back to the Wy Yung Hall for a well earned slice of cake and a warm cuppa. Al Campbell worked out the handicaps and sent riders on their way.
James, Damian and Leigh headed out first - Leigh quickly being left behind on the climb out of Counihans. Next away were triathlon specialist Rod Smith and Ben Blackman (?) (returning to both road racing and the Club after a 15 year hiatus) at 8 minutes, followed by Linc and Tim off scratch. James and Damian rode steadily, if not spectacularly fast, before being picked up by Rod and Ben at the end of Flaggy Creek Rd the first time around, before dumping them again on the way to Rodericks Rd - Ben also leaving Rod before hitting the Rodericks Rd climb for the second time. Behind them, Tim broke away from Linc early on and set about catching Ben and Rod, passing James and Damian at the top of Rodericks Rd climb the second time around and then passing Rod on the final leg back along Wy Yung-Calulu Rd but couldn't get across to Ben (scratch bunch next time Ben). In the meantime, Linc caught Damian and James right at the top of the Counihan's climb, Damian managing to jump across and follow Linc to the finish, with James not far back. Unfortunately Eric suffered mechanical problems, Leigh suffered around one Flaggy Creek loop before heading back to get the kettle on, Dave just suffered. Thanks to Al Campbell for Race Director duties, Dave McLean for signs, Marc Bouten for corner marshaling. Also thanks to Gaye & Leigh and Spohie & James for the wonderful afternoon tea delights, tea & coffee and to John Butler from the Wy Yung Hall Committee for allowing the club to use the hall facilities.

Nine riders contested the Club's time trial championship on Sunday morning in overcast and, at times, drizzly conditions. The course was the 35 km Airport Loop circuit, basically flat but the distance was sure to test all riders. Coming off the ironman a few weeks ago, Stuart Derham was considered the favourite but would face stiff competition from triathlon specialist Tim Boote and fast man David McLean. Young Tom Deller was also considered an outside chance despite still being limited to the little chain ring.
Riders set off at one minute intervals and by the left turn on to Romawi Rd at approximately half-distance, the order of riders was distinctly different from the starting order as the stronger back markers caught and passed riders ahead. An excursion to the asphalt only momentarily halted Eric Sjerp's progress at the Forge Creek Road intersection but a puncture on Romawi Road left Ross Wembridge feeling very deflated and forced an early end to his day.
At the end of considerably less than an hour, Stuart took the title for the second consecutive year by 31 seconds from Tim, with Tom a further two-and-a-half minutes further back in third. David and Eric rounded out the riders to complete the course in less than hour.

A perfect day saw a slightly small but quality field assemble for one of the flatter courses on the BRCC calendar.
The A grade bunch had all of the usual Wellington cycling club suspects, namely Nick Jehu, Mike Renehan, Chris Ray and Aaron Wain along with newbie Craig Keane, recent ironman competitor Bruce Derham and former club champion of both clubs Rowan Cook riding nothing less a steel framed cyclocross bike (hard as nails). Bairnsdale was represented by young gun Tom Deller and former club champion Dave McLean. Racing got underway with only a few surges in the first lap of two on an out and back course from Meerlieu to Emu Creek. Perhaps the burst of balmy autumn weather had riders in holiday mode, as when Keane and Jehu rolled through for a turn a small gap formed. The small gap turned into a larger gap, then into a winning gap. The two swapped turns smoothly and evenly with Keane getting home first in the slightly uphill finish. Dave McLean out-kicked Renehan in the bunch sprint for third.
B grade saw the talented Katrina East pitted against BRCC's resident hill climber Ash Higman and evergreen Chris Dungey up against two visitors from Latrobe City, Paul Makepeace and Chris Henne, and Wellington's Phil Brown. Racing was largely subdued with all riders keeping a close eye on Higman, not allowing him to get away. But at the finish it was Higman who took out the bunch sprint in front of the Latrobe duo.
An all BRCC C-grade race saw first-timer racer 18 yo Lachie Thompson up against Damian Crozier, Al Campbell and Ross Wembridge. In true teenage spirit, Lachie shot off the front from the gun in what appeared to be an attempt to catch the B-grade bunch up the road. He was reeled in by the more experienced trio before half of the first leg. All four riders continually swapped turns for the remainder of the race before Al tested the group with a few power surges in the closing stages (although the surges lasted no more than 50m and left himself feeling more punished than his competitors). Crossing the bridge for the final time, all speed went out of the small bunch as no-one was keen to lead out the remainder. A lifting of the tempo on the second last hill only served to launch Lachie into an early sprint. He was caught and passed by Damian within sight of the finish, with Al and Ross taking the remaining spots (although Al was a bit miffed that third placed was declared a "no tote dividend" due to the small bunch).

Thanks to Casey van Aarde for timing Saturday’s exciting race and thanks to Warren Meade for organising and doing the handicaps.
Front markers (Ross W., Blanche and Leigh) worked well together taking turns.
Ross put in some long hard turns on Romawi Road.
A glance back before the bend on Forge Creek Road showed the rest of the field bearing down maybe 800m behind.
On hearing this Blanche put in a long hard turn for most of the rest of Forge Creek Road.
Along Humphreys Lane the leading three raced at just under 40km/hr with Ross doing the longest turns whilst Blanche and Leigh especially, struggled to get past and do a turn.
Swinging into Bengworden Road it appeared that these three could not be caught.
Blanche surged up the rise with Ross hanging on while a tiring Leigh dropped off.
A glance behind revealed the bunch flying to catch the lead riders.
Stuart Derham had put in some hard turns dropping a few riders on Humphries Lane.
Ross Wembridge sprinted past Blanche to just pip her on the line.
It looked impossible for Leigh to be caught before the line.
He was still in third place with one bike length to go when Warren rocketed past closely followed by Ashley, Tim, Geoff, Al, Ross and Stuart.
It took more than 5 minutes for Tim to get his breathe back.
Casey couldn’t click his fingers as fast as the riders crossed the finish line.
All riders are improving especially Chris Dungey who is rapidly getting back into form.

Congratulations to Beijing Olympian, Daniel McConnell, BRCC in completing the Tour of Gippsland with a 2nd placing in the 134km third stage at Warragul on Thursday 29 July 2010. In Saturday's Stage 6 Bairnsdale Criterium and Sunday's Stage 8 Paynesville criterium Dan was well placed in the top 30 but held up due to crashes in front due to the wet conditions. On stage 7, Bairnsdale to Lakes Entrance, Dan, riding on his home territory, made a valiant solo attempt to the line but was caught by the eventual Tour winner, Pat Shaw. Dan's performance is all the more admirable given that he looked an unlikely starter the previous weekend due to illness.

Stratford to Dargo Combine Sunday 28 March 2010
105 km & 90 km
Warm, humid NW wind
Congratulations to Linc Kelly, Simon Anderson, Ashley Higman and Warren Meade in making it to the A Grade finish at Hibernia Track. To ride the tortuous 15 km from Dargo to Hibernia Track is an achievement in itself but to do so after 90 km of hard riding on a hilly course in warm humid conditions is purely phenomenal. Unofficial A Grade placings were: 1st Sam Beveridge, 2nd Roland Elsdon, 3rd Joey Peachey.
In the B Grade 90 km race Rick Young took out first place from Adam Lancaster and Kristi Glover in a sprint finish. Rick's ride was all the more impressive given his his hard 40 km race the previous day and cramping at around the 70 km. Unofficial B Grade placings were: 1st Rick Young, 2nd Adam Lancaster, 3rd Kristi Glover.
Wendy Young took out 3rd place in the C Grade 90 km in a fast race. The pace and humid conditions led to half the field retiring. Wendy had also raced the club 40 km on Saturday. Unofficial C Grade placings were: 1st Jim Lalor, 2nd Judith Dove, 3rd Wendy Young.

3 Peaks Challenge (Sunday 7 March 2010)
All five BRCC starters in last Sunday’s 3 Peaks Challenge completed the arduous 230km ride with three massive climbs and difficult descents, despite non-stop freezing rain, strong winds and nine punctures. Simon Anderson, Marc Bouten, Stuart Derham, Warren Meade and Eric Sjerp are to be regarded in awe for all completing a ride where 1200 of 1900 entrants failed to complete the distance. These tough cyclists finished at Falls Creek around 9:30 pm some 14 hours after commencing. The ride loop started at Fall’s Creek then through Mt Beauty, over Tawonga Gap to Germantown, on to Harrietville, up to Hotham Heights, along to Dinner Plain, down to Omeo, past Anglers Rest to the Bogong High Plains Road turnoff and up to Falls Creek. Additional detail at http://www.bv.com.au/great-rides/42359/. Read ABC Gippsland's Mark de Bono's description at http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2010/03/10/2841830.htm?site=gippsland
